A group of museums were chosen to receive assistance and mentoring with infrastructure improvements as Participant Museums in the Museum Infrastructure Project. Each museum received environmental monitoring equipment. The staff from these museums was required to attend the professional development workshops as part of their program. During the first year of the Museum Infrastructure Project, the participant museums were:

• The Herzstein Museum
  Clayton, New Mexico
  
• The New Mexico Mining Museum
  Grants, New Mexico
  
• The Carlsbad Museum and Art Center
  Carlsbad, New Mexico
  
• The University Museum, New Mexico State University
  Las Cruces, New Mexico
  
• The Silver City Museum
  Silver City, New Mexico
  

At the beginning 2003, a second group of museums was chosen to become Participant Museums in the Museum Infrastructure Project. The new museums are:

• Heron Lake State Park Visitor’s Center
  Los Ojos, New Mexico
  
• Tularosa Basin Historical Society
  Alamogordo, New Mexico
  
• A Las Vegas Museum District Consortium made up of:
  The Las Vegas City Museum and Rough Rider Historical Collection
  Las Vegas, New Mexico
  New Mexico Highlands University, Anthropology Collection
  New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico
  

Our hope is that as the Infrastructure Project goes forward, we will add more Participant Museums and that as museums move through the program, they will become mentors to other museums in the state.
